Health Minister: 5 Teams of Iranian Scientists Working on Coronavirus Vaccine
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Health Minister Saeed Namaki announced on Wednesday that 5 groups of specialized researchers in Iran are trying to find the coronavirus vaccine, adding that the clinical studies on the vaccine will start soon.

“At present, at least 5 groups of highly skilled Iranian groups are working on production of [coronavirus] vaccine in Iran and clinical studies on the vaccine’s effect on humans is due to start very soon,” Namaki said in a video conference with his Nicaraguan counterpart Martha Reyes Alvarez on Wednesday.

He added that Iran has also produced Favipiravir and Remdesivir, two drugs believed to be of help in fighting the coronavirus, saying that the Iran-made Remdesivir will be provided to the patients next week.

Namaki said that Iran produces 97% of drugs needed in the country, stressing readiness to share experiences with Nicaragua in the field of health and hygiene.

In relevant remarks late last month, Head of the Headquarters for Executing the Order of Imam (Khomeini) Mohammad Mokhber announced that the country's researchers had tested the home-made anti-COVID-19 virus vaccine on animals with successful results.

“The Iran-made vaccine produced by our colleagues at the Headquarters has successfully passed the animal tests and now we are preparing for tests on humans after receiving license from the health ministry,” Mokhber told reporters.

He also said that Remdesivir - a drug believed to be of help in fighting the coronavirus – has been produced by the Headquarters at a lower price than its foreign version and distributed in the market and will be mass-produced upon a request of the Iranian health ministry.

Namaki had also announced in June that the country's scientists have successfully tested the home-made anti-COVID-19 virus vaccine on animals.

"We have taken effective steps in producing vaccine and many Iranian scientists have taken rapid steps in developing COVID-19 vaccine and the Iranian coronavirus vaccine test samples on animals have proved successful," Namaki said.

He, meantime, underlined the need for global unity and cooperation in the production of vaccines and medicine in campaign against the novel coronavirus.
